About the Project
Communication disorders are seen in persons (adult and children) with hearing impairment, cleft lip and palate, autism, mental retardation, stuttering, stroke, cerebral palsy etc. In rural areas, speech therapy and audiology services are non-existent. Thus, individuals with communication disorders have several barriers in accessing services and rehabilitation programs.
We have two on-going community based projects to reach speech and hearing services to individuals living in rural areas. The first project utilizes trained community workers to screen hearing of newborns and children with a screening device. Those children who require detailed diagnostic evaluation are assessed using mobile telemedicine facility. This project covers 27 villages and over 3000 children in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The other project based in Thiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu focuses on comprehensive management of individuals with cleft lip and palate. Community workers are trained to identify/ screen and refer individuals for appropriate management to the hospital. Further, community workers are trained also to provide basic speech correction services in child’s home or school under supervision by Speech therapist. Over 300 individuals in Thiruvannamalai are beneficiaries of this project.
These projects are currently being managed and monitored through field visits by audiologists and speech therapists. Follow up and review is based on written documentation by the community worker. Such a process results in large data that is difficult to be reviewed, and despite the checks and balances it is possible to miss beneficiaries or to monitor quality of service. The penetration of telephone and internet within these villages provides the opportunity for managing these projects using ICT. Developing an e platform for the management of these projects will ensure that potential beneficiaries are reached and provided services in timely manner and the quality of service is not compromised.
In the project, a mobile application software will be developed for use on a GPRS enabled mobile phone. The community worker will be trained to use this mobile application, using which beneficiaries in rural locations can be mapped (using GPRS). This software will also enable community worker to document beneficiary information such as; demographic information, results of any screening procedures, video or audio sample. The mobile application will be linked to an e-platform so that data can be accessed through a cloud server by the host (hospital/ project admin). Thus enabling more efficient service delivery.
