The Himalayan Farm Project started as a dream. It is imagined as a space to live an organic, sustainable life close to nature and introduce a larger number of young people to a natural way of living. We are a 6 acre farm in the Lower Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The farm is a 50 minute hike away from the main road and surrounded by a mixed deciduous forest. Our water source is a perennial stream in the woods and as we are off the grid we are dependent on the sun for our lighting needs.
At the heart of the Himalayan Farm Project is the belief in food security, sustainability and shared community living. We are currently in the process of clearing out the fields, making a new kitchen out of tree branches and mud and doing up the walls of the composting toilet with reclaimed material. Currently we can host upto 8 people but plan to build 3 mud cottages for more volunteers.
The Himalayan Farm Project is a home for fellow believers around the world who believe in living in harmony with nature and in learning, working and sharing together as a community. Life is very basic on the farm. We cook out in the open on a wood fire as our new mud kitchen is still to be completed. We have have built a composting toilet that we use now.
The farms aims to -
- Develop as an experimental farm center for low cost organic agriculture

- Attract youth from across the country to expose them to a unique way of living and caring for their planet.
- Inspire young people locally and elsewhere to consider farming as a vocation
- Local farmers and youth
- Youth looking to reconnect with land, whether in India or outside.
- Create a model for sustainable organic farming in the Kumaon Himalayas
- Train local farmers in sustainable farming techniques
- Attract young people back to farming as a possible vocation
- Potential for replication by other local farms
Potential for collaboration with other local farms to achieve scale in future distribution operations
